Does our consciousness keep changing?

Our consciousness does change, depending on our situation, our growth, where we move to, the new places we live in... For example, the consciousness of a person who has lived in a village will be that of a village only, because that is his world. But the moment he goes to a big city, his consciousness expands to something larger. And if he travels to another country, it becomes even bigger.

If a person is feeling gratified, perhaps because he has received a bonus at work, he will be at ease, and will not perceive paying bills as a cumbersome chore. But the same person will be irritable about a heavy electricity bill if he has not received his entire salary amount due to taking a few days off from work. We have all been through situations like this, and that is how limited our consciousness is.

We like to ‘think’ that we know what consciousness is. We have our own version of it. But what really is consciousness? It simply means what we are conscious of, and how conscious we are of it. Sadly, we limit ourselves with political and geographical affiliations, religious denominations, our social clubs, our workplace, our families—basically, we limit our consciousness to our physical selves. Which basically means that when we are inside our homes, that is our consciousness. And when we step outside and go to our work space, that becomes our consciousness.

Let us live beyond our physical existence. Let us leave behind our physical, emotional and mental selves, and live in the spiritual self. Then our consciousness will become universal. And that universal consciousness will bring about oneness in mankind. That’s when we will stop looking at people and categorizing them on the basis of colour, caste and creed. Because we will all become aware that we have the same spirit in each one of us, which has no gender or any other affiliations.

It simply IS!
